EYE EXAMINATIONS

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Your complete eye examination will typically take 20-30 minutes. We are focused on maintaining good eye health through comprehensive examinations and the education of our customers. The examination will comprise of the following…

Patient History – Checks the patient’s presenting symptoms, general health, medication usage, family history, ocular history etc.

Vision – Evaluates how clearly each eye is seeing for both distance and near vision.

Preliminary Tests – Evaluates specific aspects of visual function and eye health.

Keratometry – Measures the curvature, regularity and stability of the cornea, the clear outer surface, or ‘window’ of the eye, through which you see.

Refraction – Determines the appropriate lens power to compensate for any visual error, i.e. shortsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism etc.

Eye Focusing, Eye Teaming, and Eye Movement Testing – Assess accommodation, ocular motility and binocular vision to determine how well the eyes function individually and together.

Eye Coordination – Ability of both eyes to work together. The brain fuses the images each eye sees in order to create one clear picture. Eye coordination is a developed skill and done properly, keeps the eyes in proper alignment. Poor eye coordination is often successfully treated with eyeglasses or the correction of other eye conditions, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Eye Health Evaluation – Examines the external structures of the eye, including the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva and surrounding eye tissues. Internally the aqueous humour, iris, lens, vitreous humour, retina optic disc (optic nerve root), vascular system and macula. We will also measure the pressure within the eye to detect glaucoma.

Supplementary Testing – Additional testing to confirm or rule out possible problems, and to provide clarification or further assessment, including for example fundus photography and visual field assessment

It's easy to overlook your eyes because they don't always hurt when something is wrong.

An eye exam not only determines whether you need new glasses or a change in prescription, but it also serves as a vital eye health examination.

Many general health issues and early signs of eye disorders can be detected by an optician before you are aware of any symptoms, and many of them can be treated if discovered early enough.
